Golf Clubs & Guitars

A while back, I wrote a few pieces as part of a series I call, “Golf Clubs & Guitars.” If you recall (you likely don’t, but that’s neither here nor there), I presented a story in three parts about my short-lived experience with guitar lessons.

Now, with spring about to “spring” (I think), I believe it’s time to start rolling out the golf stories (lest anyone accuse me of cheating them out of half of this compilation).

Why golf clubs and guitars? Good question, and I have a good answer.

I’ve found that in my life, golf and guitar are two hobbies I love which do not love me back.

I’ve been dabbling and experimenting, practicing and playing both for decades yet have never gotten much better at either. So, for me, it’s a perfect marriage, like peanut butter and jelly, Sonny & Cher, gin and tonic (though my days with gin are all but over … no regrets on that).

This week, I’ll be traveling south with my best friend/cousin Mike to play my first outdoor rounds of the season. (Thanks to technology, I now get to swing the club all year long, opting for an indoor simulator in the off months.) And given the factors involved in this trip, (first rounds of the season, best friend/cousin Mike, road trip, etc.), I’m sure there will be some good golf stories to share. At least he and I will think so. (We think we’re funny … we may be the only ones.)

But I also have (as you can imagine) a stockpile of stories from my decades on the links, and choosing which to share will be my challenge. I have tales of daring, injury (nothing grave; in fact, most of them hilarious), great shots and not-so-great shots, people I’ve met, and strange things that have happened to me that I’m sure others golfers can identify with (and some that possibly no one else has experienced).

It should be a fun little romp across the fairways, greens (or more accurately, through the roughs, the trees and the sand traps) I’ve experienced, many of which occurred under the credible witness––and to the sheer delight––of the aforementioned best friend/cousin Mike (since most of my golf stories happened at the expense of my dignity or short-term health and/or comfort; and he loves when that happens).

Today serves merely as a warning, a teaser, a harbinger (to use that poetic term of spring) of things to come. On our trip, I’ll review many of my stories with Mike, and I will ask him to help me curate them so I can share the best (and worst, which really are the best) moments with you.

Meanwhile, enjoy your week. I hope it finds you in the middle of the fairway, with a helping breeze, your favorite club in your hand and your best friend at your side. (I hope to have one of those when we hit the course.)
