Grateful For You

This week, people all around the U.S. will be telling themselves and others what they’re thankful for. It’s not a bad exercise. In fact, we should probably remind ourselves often (maybe daily) what–and whom–we’re grateful for.
Lots of “experts” tell us to do that, and honestly, I routinely (though not daily) make a mental list; to give me perspective and to reset those days when I’m feeling like things are working against me.
I’m not usually big on doing or saying things just because a holiday or an "expert" tells me to. But since it’s Thanksgiving week, I will use this space specifically to say that I’m thankful for you. And for your attention. And your loyalty. And your support.
After more than two decades writing for others (which I still do), in 2013, I started writing in earnest for myself. And when I write my essays, I try to do it for an audience of one … me. I feel that’s the best way to produce personal, creative work. Because if I try to think too much about what other people want from my stories, the impact of my prose loses its authenticity. And I always want my work to reflect who I am at the moment I’m writing it.
Anyway, back in 2013, I knew my audience was limited to just a few family members and friends. And over the past dozen years, it has grown, yet it still isn’t large by any stretch. That doesn’t really matter to me. Sure, I’d love it if hundreds of thousands (or millions) of people followed my work online. And I’d love it if my books were on the shelves of every independent bookstore in the United States.
But they aren’t, and frankly, they probably never will be. Again, that doesn’t matter much to me. What matters is that you are here for a reason. Maybe it’s out of obligation because you’ve known me all your life. That’s fine, though I would say don’t feel obligated. (If my work isn’t your cup of tea, that’s OK.)
But more likely, you’ve shown up here because you like what I write, and for that, I am extremely thankful. Because although I write for myself, it always feels good when someone tells me that my writing influences them, makes them laugh, makes them cry, or moves them in some small way.
And it’s those individual conversations that drive me to keep doing this. So, thank you. You have no idea how much it means to me that you like my writing, and that you continue to show up.
Happy Thanksgiving.
